    Fox Run Park Tree Tour

    Saturday, April 25th, 2026

    10:00am

    Led by Norma Brough

Please join us for a wonderful, eye-opening tour of the Culturally Modified Trees in Fox Run Park! This park has a high number of significantly modified trees in a relatively small area. The Utes and other tribes spent much time here in the past, and many still visit.

*Meet at Fox Run Park, Rollercoaster Trailhead, on Saturday, 4/25.

*15926-15980 Roller Coaster Rd, Colorado Springs, CO 80921

    *Tour begins at 10:00am

*Bring water, snack and hiking pole, if needed.

*Wear good walking/hiking shoes. Although this walk is relatively easy, we will go off trail and there may be roots, uneven ground and other objects to navigate around.

*Please RSVP - and feel free to bring a friend who is interested in learning more about these trees.

Upcoming Tree Tour Saturday, May 9th, 2026 Benet Hill Monastery

Mark your calendars for this one!

We will be guided through the majestic forest of Benet Hill Monastery (a private property) by Sister Jan (NASTaP Board Member). Come see the incredible Culturally Modified Trees the property has to offer. In addition, we will be introduced to the labyrinth on site, built by none other than Sister Jan herself. The sacredness of this property is exceptional - you will feel and sense this when you are there.

When turning into the monastery drive (3190 Benet Lane) off of Highway 83, stay on main drive until you see a parking lot off to your right. Meet there between 9:45 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.

    * Tour will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m.

    * Bring a snack/water/ pole.

Due to being on private property, with access permission required, this tour is reserved for NASTaP members only, and a waiver will be signed prior to the tour. (Photos with tree locations will not be permitted.) We appreciate the monastery opening up this opportunity for us, and we pledge to be respectful of their privacy.

If you are a NASTaP member and are interested in attending, please e-mail: heidi.wigand.nicely@gmail.com

Only those signing up in advance will be permitted on the grounds. We thank you for your understanding.

From Friday, July 31 through Sunday morning August 2, a transformative experience will be offered in the primordial woods of the spiritual and family retreat center of La Forêt in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

The weekend will begin with a potluck dinner, campfire, storytelling and music on Friday starting at 5 pm. On Saturday, a full day of talks and group discussions interspersed with activities and three meals will take place. We will wind up on Sunday with a re-dedication at our late president, Dr. Jefferson’s memorial tree and wrap up by 11 am so people can make their way home.

Confirmed speakers include Don Wells, Mountain Stewards; Donald Whyte, Ute Mountain Ute and retired National Park Service; and Farley Ketchum, ethnobiologist with the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe. More details to come.

A range of lodgings are available. Shared lodging in cabins, either double or single occupancy, is available for $70.50 per night, per room, and hotel-style lodging and camping are available by contacting La Foret directly or call one of the local hotels or B&Bs. New this year: If you want to bring a guest, you only need to pay for their meals ($64). If they are staying in the same room with you in the cabins, they don’t need to pay for lodging, either.

Early Bird registration: for a limited time, members save $60 on registration. Shared lodgings are also limited, so please respond asap.

There are more ways to participate by sponsoring a tribal elder or youth to come to the conference, donating school supplies to be distributed at the reservations and underwriting our presenters’ expenses and honoraria.

For questions, please contact: lee.recca@gmail.com or call at 303834-0320.
