Let us plan to welcome the 14-plus elders and youth of Ute tribes when they come to our community for the conference in late July! There are many small projects that individuals and teams can implement, such as welcome banners, booklets, goodie bags, school supplies, elders presents, swim suits and sports equipment, coloring books, craft projects, vendors, silent auction, display tables, etc.

We'll meet in the community room of Serrano's at 11 am; come a little early to order a beverage, snack or lunch. We must vacate the room by 2 pm for another group. Bring your ideas or a show and tell item. All ideas are on the table. No, you don't need to be a member or plan to attend the conference for this event. All are welcome!

Plans are to broadcast the meeting via Zoom so include a note if you want to receive a Zoom invite.

From Friday afternoon, July 31 through Sunday morning August 2, a transformative experience will be offered in the primordial woods of the retreat center at La Forêt, north of Colorado Springs.

Early Bird registration closes soon, where joining and current members save $60 (more than one-third!) To register, please go to:  https://nastap.org/event-6643182. Local members attending during daytime must register.

A range of lodgings are available. If you want to join in our deal on shared lodging in cabins, double or single occupancy are available for $70.50 per night, per room. As of mid-May, only about six rooms are still open!  If you want to bring a guest, you only need to pay for their meals ($64). If they are staying in the same cabin room with you, they don’t need to pay for lodging, either.

Hotel-style lodging with en-suite bathrooms, RVing and camping are available by contacting La Foret directly or call one of the local hotels or B&Bs.

The weekend will begin with a potluck dinner on Friday starting at 5 pm. On Saturday, a full day of talks, group discussions, activities and three meals will take place with evening campfire, storytelling and music. We will wind up on Sunday with a re-dedication at our late president, Dr. Jefferson’s memorial tree and wrap up by 11 am so people can make their way home.

Confirmed speakers include Don Wells, Mountain Stewards; Donald Whyte, Ute Mountain Ute and retired National Park Service; and Farley Ketchum, ethnobiologist with the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe. We have just learned that our board member Vida Clark (Ute Mountain Ute) is coming and bringing 10 youth and elders with her!

There are more ways to participate by sponsoring a tribal elder or youth to come to the conference, donating school supplies to be distributed at the reservations and underwriting our presenters’ expenses and honoraria.
